Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) is a germicide for body and head lice – make a strong decoction (simmer herb with the lid on for 30 to 60 minutes) of hyssop and apply to your child’s head. Let stand for 30 to 60 minutes and rinse out. It won’t hurt if you put it on at bed time and leave it until the morning.

Most of the lice will wash off, but lice do have a sticky gunk that allows them to stay stuck to the hair, especially the eggs. Comb out the remaining lice and nits (eggs). Do this daily for at least 5 to 7 days to be sure you get the eggs, too. Lice eggs hatch every 10 days, so you might want to do it daily for 10 days, just to be on the safe side.

Recommendation: Hyssop is the recommended herb for head lice because it actually kills the lice. You can use hyssop oil, if you can find it. Add it to a carrier oil such as olive oil, Grapeseed oil, etc. Neem oil is also known to kill the lice and the eggs.

Prevention: To stop an outbreak again, make a hair rinse of lavender, rosemary, and thyme with a drop or two of tea tree oil or the essential oil you used. You can also use just a rosemary rinse which will stop the lice from depositing their eggs again. It also works as a great detangler for the hair.

Followup: For the next 3 weeks be sure to use this treatment at least once a week, just to be sure all the eggs are gone. Home remedies for lice are the best ways to stop an infestation of head and body lice. Even if you are not 100% certain your child has lice, itching is usually a good sign that you should begin treatment as a priority to prevent spreading to others.
